@VMwarestorage on twitter asked for some tests of the VAAI-functionality in vsphere. I offered my help and here are the results:
First the setup:
Server: Dell R710 with Dual E5520 CPU’s, 32GB memory and 2 Intel X520 10G nics.
Storage: Equallogic PS6010 with 15 1TB sata-disks in RAID6 (firmware 5.0.4)
Storagenetwork: Dell 8024F
Software: VMware vSphere: 4.1u1 – build 348481 – Equallogic MPIO-plugin installed
Clonetest: Cloning a 20GB VM.
Eagerzero-test: Creating a 20GB eagerzeroedthick-disk
I initiated the the diskcreation-process on a vMA with this command:
time vmkfstools –server x.x.x.x -c 20G -d eagerzeroedthick -a lsilogic /vmfs/volumes/4c99fe29-683e2156-515b-0026b975e476/testeager/testdisk1.vmdk
The figures speak for them selves, VAAI is awesome. I cant wait to test this on our new Netapp-box.

Interesting to see that with jumbo frames enabled operations actually took longer to complete than when using a standard mtu.
